Peregrine Falcon
Falco peregrinus · Falcão-peregrino
The largest falcon in Portugal, massive-looking, with broad-based wings and a black hood and moustache, sedentary but rare, nesting on cliff faces. It feeds exclusively on birds caught in flight, reaching the fastest hunting stoop of any Portuguese bird. At least two pairs breed regularly on Berlenga and are fairly easy to spot in the areas they hold, though they avoid the busiest tourist zones in peak season.
