Practicalities

Plan Your Visit

Four steps, then the island.

Four steps

  1. Book a boat

Every crossing leaves Peniche. Summer weekends sell out weeks ahead.

    Compare boats
  2. Buy the pass

One per person, online only, for your visit date.

Get the pass (opens in a new tab)
  3. Check the sea

Boats cancel on heavy swell. Look the evening before.

    Read the weather guide
  4. Arrive early

Check in at the time your boat operator gives you. Parking fills in August.

No. Being on the island without a valid pass is an offence.

Do young children need one?

Yes. Children up to 6 are free, but every child must be registered and hold a pass.

I'm a foreign visitor. How do I register?

Online at berlengaspass.icnf.pt with your ID, or through a licensed boat operator.

I live in Peniche. How do I get a free pass?

Email berlengaspass@icnf.pt with proof of address. Once approved, you issue exempt passes yourself.

How long can I stay?

Up to 7 consecutive days if you sleep on the island.

Who else is exempt?

Island workers, Fishermen's Quarter rights-holders, licensed operators, boat crews, researchers, maintenance staff and official bodies. All still need a pass.
