Black Rat
Rattus rattus · Rato-preto
Invasive
A cosmopolitan, omnivorous rodent of Asian origin, spread worldwide by ships. In the archipelago it reached only Berlenga island, never the outer islets or the Farilhões. It preys on seabird eggs, chicks and occasionally adults, including Cory's shearwater, and a 2014 study of 72 nests found heavy rat activity in and around them. Its eradication, completed in 2018, was one of the great conservation wins of the LIFE Berlengas project.
