Duque de Bragança Lighthouse
Farol Duque de Bragança

Lit in 1842 at the island's highest point, a 29-metre tower whose light stands about 121 m above the sea and reaches 20 nautical miles (37 km) over one of Europe's busiest shipping lanes, flashing white every ten seconds. It began with sixteen Argand oil lamps, gained a hyper-radiant lens in 1897, was electrified in 1926, automated in 1985, and switched to solar power in 2000, a conversion that won a national defence-and-environment award; LED optics have lit it since 2009. Kept by resident families until it was automated, it is reached by the lighthouse trail from the Fishermen's Quarter.
