Berlengas Wall Lizard
Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis · Lagartixa-das-berlengas
متوطّن
An endemic Berlengas subspecies of Carbonell's wall lizard, distinguished by its larger size, especially in males, and darker belly, a case of island gigantism driven by high density and competition. It lives on Berlenga, the Estelas and the Farilhões and is very common on Berlenga, reaching 2,000–4,000 individuals per hectare in season, though numbers have fallen with predation and habitat loss linked to the surge in yellow-legged gulls. You will see it everywhere underfoot.
