Ocellated Lizard

Lacerta lepida · Sardão

Possibly locally extinct

The largest lizard of the Iberian Peninsula. On the Berlengas it formed a locally distinct population that colonised Berlenga and the O-da-Velha islet some 9,000–10,000 years ago. It basks in the sun, hibernates in winter and breeds from mid-March to mid-July. The last known Berlengas record dates to 2010, and it may now be locally extinct, pressured by yellow-legged gulls, black rats preying on its eggs, and rabbits burrowing through its nests.
