Extinct as a breeder
This oceanic gull colonised the Berlengas in the late 1970s as it expanded down the Iberian coast, forming a small colony on the O-da-Velha islet that reached thirteen pairs in 1979, the species' southernmost breeding record ever. Poor reproductive success led it to vanish after 1982, and it is now regionally extinct as a Portuguese breeder, occurring in mainland waters mainly in autumn and winter.
