Band-rumped Storm-petrel

Hydrobates castro · Roque-de-castro

Vulnerable in Portugal

A markedly pelagic little storm-petrel that rarely comes near shore, present year-round in Portuguese waters. Two populations differ in size, voice and breeding season, a summer breeder (March–October) and a winter breeder (September–February) that nests in the Farilhões, Madeira and the Azores. In the Berlengas, breeding is confirmed on Farilhão Grande (200–400 pairs in 1995, 102–210 in 2012), with new confirmations on Farilhão da Cova and Farilhão do Nordeste during the LIFE project. It nests in small cavities on predator-free islets and forages far out to sea; black rats prevent it breeding on the main island.
