Ryby
Dusky Grouper
Epinephelus marginatus · Mero
Protected in Portugal
A large rocky-reef fish and a star sighting for divers, commonest around the Farilhões. It is highly vulnerable: slow-growing, slow-breeding and bold towards divers. Every dusky grouper is born female, matures at about five, and changes sex to male around age ten. In Portugal it is protected and its hunting is banned.
