Long-finned Pilot Whale

Dark grey, with a big rounded beakless head and a low swept-back fin, males reach 6 m, females 5 m. Mainly pelagic, it avoids water shallower than 200 m but comes near the coast where food is abundant, feeding chiefly on squid. Groups can number dozens and are seen off Peniche, Nazaré and the Berlengas.
