Misericórdia Monastery
Mosteiro da Misericórdia
The ruined monastery whose stones built almost everything else on the island. Hieronymite monks founded it in 1513 under Queen Leonor's patronage, aiding navigation and rescuing shipwreck survivors, until famine, disease and pirate raids forced them out by around 1548. Its masonry was reused for the fort and the Castelinho; the Fishermen's Quarter now stands on its site.
