Enquadramento geológico
The archipelago lies about 10 km west of Peniche in three groups of islets and rocks of exceptional geodiversity, with rock types and ages found nowhere else in the Iberian Massif. Its formations span the Neoproterozoic to the Palaeozoic and record the assembly of Pangaea, the Variscan mountain-building, and the later Atlantic rifting that raised and dropped the fault-bounded blocks in a 'piano-key' structure.
